Whatcha Listenin to?

Most recent music I bought was the new album by Teddy Thompson "Up Front and Down Low"--his earlier albums are more on the pop/rock side, this one is country western. He has a beautiful sweet voice which is very up front in the mix. He's the son of Richard and Linda Thompson who were a folk singing duo, and he kind of approaches American country as a type of folk music (which is a good approach imo).

The Reason

I've heard this song a million times before and liked it fine.  It came on the radio while I was thinking about something and it took on a whole new level of powerful for me.

This song means so much more when it's taken outside of a romantic context and placed in a role where there can be no subtle or out of place strings attached.  I can image a child singing this to a parent - or a parent to the child.  I also imagine that this experience might be what certain people have gone through when they used to adamantly oppose gay marriage, but then have changed their mind because of someone that opened their eyes.

The Reason - artist Hoobastank

I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found out a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
Thats why i need you to hear

I've found out a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is You

and the reason is You [x3]

I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found out a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I've found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you

Carrie Brownstein's Music Blog

I was really happy to find that Carrie Brownstein (formerly of Sleater-Kinney, one of my fav bands) is now blogging on music for NPR.  Here's her recent post on the protest music of the Bush years.

"no sound no service"

I seem to know a lot of 15 year olds in bands at the moment...this is a friend of mine's band that I went to hear perform today.  The band members range in age from 12-15.  My friend is the oldest and writes most of the songs.  In this YouTube clip she's the tallest: "Escape."

The Dog Song

Kat--I LOVE that song!  'Tis one of my favs.

She has a great angry rant song (umm, not that I would know anything about that....) called "Sari" and another very cool jazzy song called "Manhattan Avenue"--you can hear them both at this NPR site: All Songs Considered.

Nellie McKay

Ahhhh Nellie... I could listen to her ALL. DAY.

YES! I love Sari and Manhattan Avenue! "Long and Lazy River" is beautiful also (it isn't available on last.fm or itunes.. sniff, tear..). And "I Wanna Get Married" - I love her sarcasm and wit LOL.

Her style is fantastic, I love it.

Jars of Clay

Love Song for a Savior
I didn't like this song much the first several times I heard it, but then I seemed to always tune in at the end where they repeat the chorus for the last 20 seconds or so. I seem to be more sensitive to that sort of repetition than most people. After I got a few chances to really hear the song and get its full message and to pick up on some of the musical nuances, I've had a hard time getting it out of my head. Note that there's no real video at this link.

As a bonus, another JoC song I like that is radically different from the above is Liquid. Note that this one does have a video, and it should have an epileptic warning attached to it. This song is a bit more inline with what JoC is becoming, a pop band that is somewhat distanced from its Christian origins. If one didn't catch the reference in the band's name and wasn't familiar with the Passion narrative, they'd probably wonder just what this song is about. The same goes for "Flood" and some of their other titles. I'm not really complaining, since that tactic has gotten their message broadcast on secular stations just like P.O.D. and other "stealth" Christian groups.

reminiscing .... ahhh....

Try this at the gym.

Blackbird

I love that song. I heard an interview with Paul McCartney that said he wrote it in response to reading about a woman involved in the civil rights movement which I thought was pretty cool.

Happy Mother's Day

This is a beautiful song for Mother's Day I think:

Lullaby for a Stormy Night

When a man loves a woman...

OK, I've had this song STUCK in my head since Saturday afternoon!  Even yesterday, when suffering an excrutiating migraine for the better part of my day, I WAS STILL SINGING IT IN MY MIIIIIIND!  I can't stop it.

'Tis a lovely song, tho.

Chris Daughtry - "What About Now?"

LOVE the Lyrics to this song!!! (And they work for Jack and Kate) Smile

Shadows fill an empty heart
As love is fading,
From all the things that we are
But are not saying.
Can we see beyond the scars
And make it to the dawn?

Change the colors of the sky.
And open up to
The ways you made me feel alive,
The ways I loved you.
For all the things that never died,
To make it through the night,
Love will find you.

What about now?
What about today?
What if you're making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love never went away?
What if it's lost behind words we could never find?
Baby, before it's too late,
What about now?

The sun is breaking in your eyes
To start a new day.
This broken heart can still survive
With a touch of your grace.
Shadows fade into the light.
I am by your side,
Where love will find you.

What about now?
What about today?
What if you're making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love, it never went away?
What if it's lost behind words we could never find?
Baby, before it's too late,
What about now?

Now that we're here,
Now that we've come this far,
Just hold on.
There is nothing to fear,
For I am right beside you.
For all my life,
I am yours.

What about now?
What about today?
What if you're making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love never went away?
What if it's lost behind words we could never find?

What about now?
What about today?
What if you're making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love never went away?
What if it's lost behind words we could never find?
Baby, before it's too late,
Baby, before it's too late,
Baby, before it's too late,
What about now?
