This archetype represents the voice of experience. Sporting an exceptional memory, the Elder has learned valuable lessons from a long line of successes and failures and is skilled in passing this knowledge onto others whose lives can be made easier by heeding the Elder’s advice.
The cost, though, of the Elder’s experience is baggage and scars that sometimes cause the Elder to envy or even resent her-or-his comparatively carefree pupils. Thus those who invoke the Elder must beware of bitterness and the temptation to exploit.
If you are dissatisfied with the dominance of this archetype in your life, it may be time to find something else to celebrate about your life other than the things that have happened to you. Find a talent that you have and develop it, preferably with a group of others who are doing the same. Make a deliberate effort to engage in behaviors that are oriented around the present or future rather than the past.
