Potential Writer's Strike

FIRST CASUALTY OF THE WRITERS STRIKE REVEALED: HEROES ORIGINS DROPPED

Contract talks designed to avert a strike by Hollywood writers have adjourned without reaching an agreement. The US TV and Movie industry is now facing the possibility of a strike for the first time in almost two decades.

The studios' Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said discussions may resume tomorrow concerning payments for DVD sales for writers.

Walt Disney and CBS may be most hurt from a walkout because of their dependence on scripted television programs for revenue - however, several genre TV shows have already felt the impact of the walkout.

NBC has dropped plans for "Heroes" spin-off show, "Origins". NBC had planned to debut the show while "Heroes" was on hiatus using Hollywood talent such as Eli Roth, Kevin Smith and writer Michael Dougherty.

Another show which looks to be affected is the recently announced Joss Whedon project, "Dollhouse".

Whedon was set to team up once again with former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" actress Eliza Dushku for the new Fox Sci-Fi TV show.

"Dollhouse" follows a top-secret world of people programmed with different personalities, abilities and memories, depending on their mission. The show centers on Dushku's character, Echo, as she slowly begins to develop some self-awareness - she is a part of a program where agents memories are wiped after each assignment/mission.

Well I was a bit worried about that Hero's spin-off, that maybe they were spreading the show too thin, but that Whedon show sounds like an awesome idea (and I love his stuff anyway).  Strangely though it sounds like an idea for a sci-fi novel I had ages ago--though in my version the agents were going to be part of some intergalactic group and go live lives on other planets as different kinds of species, genders, etc. and they weren't going to have their memories wiped.  Then the main character was going to start questioning the right of this group to interfere in other lives, cultures, etc.  Unfortunately I think my idea would require a much bigger special effects budget.  *Sigh* it all comes down to funding.
