Lost Jones

So many things that aren't actually about Lost remind me of Lost.  I'm sure this is true for the rest of you addicts.  So as part of our twelve step program I thought we could post things that made me go "Lost"...

Headline in "The Boston Globe":  "Deciding They Can't All Be Saved" (which was actually about trying to save stranded marine mammals.

Lost Video footage--Must See!

Dramatic Lost footage from the Pearl Station.  May explain everything--perhaps even the whereabouts of the RADIO!

Lost Connections

So I'm watching "Kung Fu Panda" last night (which was great, btw) and there were some lines of dialogue about the delusion of control which reminded me of Lost briefly.  Then later, I had a fairly long dream in which I was alternatively watching Lost (one scene--Jack removed his "Jack" mask to reveal that he was actually Kelly Robinson from the old "I Spy" TV show--and I thought, oh, now I understand why he is not "one of us") or attending an academic conference where I was going to give a paper about boxes (including the tv box) and was being shown around by Kate (not Evangeline Lilly--but Kate being a "real" person in the dream).

And I hazily woke up and was thinking something along the lines of the island being the source of all mythologies/stories  including the ancient ones, the current pop culture ones, or even the ones that seem like they're completely personal (like dreams).   So I don't know if that make sense to anyone else :-) or whether it has any relevance to figuring out the plot of the show, but I thought it was kinda cool.  Of course that may mean that my lost connection is synaptic. :-)

rhizomatic

I see below that you referenced the ted video on string theory, have you seen abrams ted video on mystery boxes?

rhizomatic...

the San Francisco treat!

I hadn't thought of it before but that's the perfect description for Lost!

Yeah, I have seen Abrams mystery box TED video.  hmmm, maybe I'll repost my old "Boxes" theory just for giggles n squeaks.

Narnia Smarnia!

A friend sent me a link to a site that I thought some of you would like. It deals with the various books related to The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. (Hey Charlotte where have I seen that name before?) It relates some of the events in the books back to Lost. There are a few "spoiler" items that are labeled as such in case you don't want a preview of things to come. Thought you guys might like this. Take a look here.

Narnia Crossover

Thanks Jukin!

I love the Chronicles of Narnia...

Trying to think of any other character crossovers...

Jack as Puddleglum the Marshwiggle? ;-)

Ah, actually Puddleglum has a great Lost related quotation on Wikipedia:

"Suppose we have only dreamed, or made up, all of those things—trees and grass and sun and moon and stars and Aslan himself. Suppose we have. Then all I can say is that, in that case, the made-up things seem a good deal more important than the real ones."

MYST

From Wiki:

Myst is a graphic adventure video game designed and directed by the brothers Robyn and Rand Miller. It was developed by Cyan Worlds, a Spokane, Washington-based studio, and published and distributed by Brøderbund. The Millers began working on Myst in 1991 and released it for the Macintosh computer on September 24, 1993.

Myst puts the player in the role of the Stranger, who uses a special book to travel to the island of Myst. There, the player uses other special books written by an artisan and explorer named Atrus to travel to several worlds known as "Ages". Clues found in each of these Ages help reveal the back-story of the game's characters. The game has several endings, depending on the course of action the player takes.

MYST includes a ship like the Black Rock, clues in the constellations, hatches that need power, a strange cabin in the woods and characters that you don't know who to trust, Atrus as Jacob? and of course: puzzles, puzzles and more puzzles.

THE NEW PEOPLE....

The New People:PROGRAM PROFILE:
The New People
1969-1970

On The New People, a planeload of young people crash land on an abandoned tropical island that had been set up as a nuclear test site. Conveniently, there was an ample stock of food, cars and homes built in anticipation of a test blast that never happened.

Tension came about as the survivors set out to create their own progressive, liberal, anti-establishmentarian society. In a typical episode, island rebel Stanley campaigns against building a water line for the girls' showers fearing "an emerging power structure." In another, electing an armed peace officer causes the New People to debate "law and order, gun control and the role of police in society."

Developed for TV by Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone), the show was cancelled on January 12, 1970. There was a comic book version of The New People published by Dell that hit the stands, ironically, right after the show left the air. That lasted two issues.

Everything old is new again - the current ABC series Lost is loosely based (purposely or not) on this one season wonder.

Seriously, check out some of the similarities...

The New People

after their plane crash-lands, the college students explore their new surroundings ...
A devastating illness threatens the students until a bio-chemist comes up with a formula that may cure or kill.
One of the students is put on trial for killing another student but while many islanders are convinced of his guilt, evidence is lacking.
Some of the students, unable to accept being marooned forever on Bomano, build a huge life-raft to escape.
The discovery of a skeleton and several strange disappearances forces the students to mount an expedition to the other side of the island to find out who else is living on Bomano.
The discovery of a cache of guns leads the new people to select policemen for the community, but this causes even more trouble
A fishing trawler lands on shore, and the islanders now have a means of returning to civilization. But Paul is mysteriously opposed to leaving the island.

Oh Man!

I remember that show!  I was really disappointed that it didn't last longer than one season.

Mad Hatters

A letter to the editor in the paper today was responding to an article about mercury poisoning and pointing out that The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland is a portrait of someone with mercury poisoning.  Hatters were prone to mercury poisoning because mercury was used in the production of felt hats.  Somehow this reminded me both of Dan having no head protection in The Constant, and tin-foil hats :-)

Yogic philosophy and Jane Austen

Got an email today from a group inviting me to find out about a new approach to literature incorporating the thoughts of an East Indian Yogic Philosopher, Sri Aurobindo, and using that philosophy to read the works of Jane Austen.

Some of the philosophy sounded very "Lost" -- plus the whole crossover of Eastern & Western influences.  A few bullet points of the philosophy:

"Spiritual evolution: The universe is infinite Spirit in the process of evolving so that it can manifest its infinite potential through an infinite variety of finite forms and experiences.

Man is a transitional being: As plant and animal life has evolved from matter, and humanity has evolved from the animal, human life will ultimately give rise to beings with what he terms supramental consciousness.

Life: Life is a conscious universal plane or field, not merely a characteristic of individual biological forms. Life has a consciousness and a character and it responds to human consciousness and initiative.

Aim of spirituality: The ultimate aim of spirituality is not to transcend or escape from the suffering and limitations of life on earth but to perfect and transform life on earth into the life divine."

"Portal to mythical Mayan underworld found in Mexico"

"Mexican archeologists have discovered a maze of stone temples in underground caves, some submerged in water and containing human bones, which ancient Mayans believed was a portal where dead souls entered the underworld...The souls of the dead followed a mythical dog who could see at night, de Anda said."

OK, how is it that the writers have been alluding to something for four years, that was just discovered?  Bum, bum, baaaaaaa....

Mayan discovery

The llama song -- Lost Version

A long time ago my son found the llama song on line and it is one of our favourites!

Today I see there's a Lost version! Laughing

"A long time ago"

UGH! I read a simple sentence that includes the words "a long time ago" and I immediately translate that into "A long, long time ago..." And now it'll be in my head... durn you American Pie song for having a catchy tune!! :P

"A long time ago"

Hah! The first thing that comes to mind for me is--in a galaxy far, far away...

Good Vibrations

I was watching this TED video with Brian Greene explaining String Theory--by the way this was the clearest explanation I've ever heard--and all these things about vibrations, and special, universal numbers, and different dimensions, and electro-magnetism (plus the gravity-blanket illustration that always reminds me of synchronicity)--which all reminds me of Lost. I'm sure quantum mechanics and string theory is playing a big part in the science part of the explanation of the show--though I don't know if it will be an explanation which actually makes sense, or works for someone who really understands string theory. I think it will be more that string theory and Lost will have some major thematic similarities as narratives. But that's how I think all the allusions on the show work to be honest.

Obama/Clinton/McCain

Now a Polar Bear on a Tropical Island? So many reasons why that's amazing!

My wife

is always making fun of me for my lost addition.

We were watching what you posted, and I said to here somebody will have that linked online in the next two hours. Thanks for proving me right (for once).

Amazing!!!

Laughing Yeah baby!!!!!!

A round about reminder

OK so this is a sort of round about way to get to Lost but the other day I was in the grocery store and was looking for Galla apples. I couldn't find them but I did find a new variety that had a similar appearance. They're called Jazz Apples which of course reminded me of our very own JazProf, which reminded me of this site which reminded me of Lost. When I left the store I got in the car and an old Jimmy Buffett song came on called "He Went to Paris". The song has a line "...he hopped on a freighter" - which of course reminded me of Lost. Later that night I was on the computer and downloaded a trial version of some software which I later purchased. The instructions to activate the program included the phrase "enter the activation numbers into your computer" which ... well you see where this is going right? Yesterday I was watching the news when they were nice enough to remind us to turn the clocks ahead for daylight savings time and said that the clock was 'jumping ahead' which made me think of Desmond and...

ok in short EVERYTHING reminds me of Lost!!! Cool

Synchronicity

Heh, Jukin...I was chompin on an apple as I read your post! (I usually am at this time of day :-) Not a Jazz Apple though, unfortunately. Heh, picturing a Granny Smith playing the Sax...Thanks for thinkin' of me :-)

Synchronicity

HAHA!  That was really funny!  Gotta love days like that. Smile

My nephew's birthday

Yeah, that was the last time I "went Lost." Someone gave him this as a present. The picture is not that good, but... yep, there are 42 "steps" in the game. I was tempted to take a closer look at it to check what was in the "numbers steps"... but Alex --my nephew-- didn't want me to take his toy... I guess I'll have to wait...

Dag Nabbit!!

Jaz this is all your fault!!! I tried to read "The Cat in the Hat" to my son last night and I kept hearing your references to Lost! LOL! Now when I pick up the book, the Cat is Ben, Sally is Kate, the fish is Desmond .... ugh!! It's all over for me and the good Doctor of Seuss.

I'm begging you please... please, don't tell me how Whoville represents the island and the Grinch is really Jacob! Wink

But who is Horton?

Now according to Ben, Horton can't see the island, but I'm not sure I completely buy this...

And just remember J-man "A person's a person, no matter how small..."

Beelzebufo

Scientists have discovered the remains of a gigantic "Devil Frog" from the age of the dinosaurs--armored and with TEETH. I'm thinking--Sawyer's going to wind up paying dearly for the life of that tree frog. He set some kind of revenge cycle in motion, and you know, with this whole time travel thing, we could be seeing Devil Frogs on the island soon! Probably gobble poor James up in one giant gulp and then say..."If I had to hear "SOB" one more time, I was gonna croak." Wink

Actually, didn't think of Lost, per se, immmediately, but of Fred--'cause I hadn't rememberd that "bufo" was latin for frog or toad--and now thinking about Fred's dreams about the 1000 buffoons.  (And of course the bufo bank.) Smile

Devil Frogs are cool, but what about George Michael?

"Devil Frogs" are cool....but what about George Michael's "You Gotta Have Faith?"  "Eli Stone's" new theme song reminds me of Lost.  This could easily be Locke's theme song as well.   Speaking of Eli Stone, did anyone else happen to catch the add that ran on the pilot episode.....the one about Oceanic Airlines' Golden Pass?

Locke's gotta have faith

Annie,

I love George Micheal's song which is almost exactly why I hated hearing it in pop-recurring commercials!  But, I agree, Locke needs an iPod that plays "You gotta have faith" while he's trekking through the jungle. Smile

I did watch the pilot episode, which was actually pretty cute, but only because the friend I watch Lost with wanted to see the Golden Pass ad.  But I wasn't paying too much attention so I don't remember what she said.

Every Lostie has an iPod...

They are here ;-)

LOL

Laughing Very nice Kat!!

Sonofa...

I read that article this morning and I didn't even think of Anthony! Oh, Anthony... sweet, sweet Anth--*crunch!* Cry

Frogs

Cool!

I actually picked up a Druid Animal Oracle the other day... it's simply beautiful.  It talks about the psycology and lore associated with different animals... it completely made me think of Antonee and the other animal visitors in Lost.

The Frog is beauty and power behind appearances.  The frog brings the "medicine" for a person to heal.  I thought of Hurley's emotional connection to the frog when he found it.  I kind of see Hurley as this sort of figure on the island - like when he set up the golf course - he was giving people the tool to get over their fears... and again with Charlie in the van... and tricking Sawyer to be nice.  He's on the outside not your traditional sort of attractive, but just about everyone I know loves Hurley because of his character.

When Sawyer squashes the frog - in the "oracle" this would mean he is learning how to embrace difficult circumstances, but it also says that no matter how daunting the challenges are - being presented with the frog brings the power to heal that may well lead to a rich reward in the end.

Not Sure what the Hurley bird is...

...but the bird of prey in this thingy I've got is the Eagle.

The Eagle brings a sense of purpose and the courage to see that purpose through and move forward in your life with confidence.

If you challenge the eagle you run the risk of unbalancing your mind and your heart - becoming over analytical.  Advice given to those with this challenge is to pay more attention to your dreams and listen to the calls of the unconscious without denying the value of the rational, questioning part of your mind.

It would seem to me that this means now that he's off the island he should at least hear Charlie out.

Druids

AWESOME forum topic jaz...

As you already know, this morning I came across this article that made me go "Lost". It talks about the recent discovery of Druids near Colchester, Essex in England. Other discoveries in the burial remains uncovered board games used in divination, including divination rods for tortune telling, bottles of scents, tools, etc. And some may be familiar with Essex from Lost - the most recent reference is in Confirmed Dead - Charlotte was born in Essex, England; Daniel is from Essex, Massachusetts, and previous to that we learned that Desmond was incarcerated in a militatry prison near the same location of the discovery of these ancient burial sites.

Essex - my concern is when a word comes up more than twice in the show (especially in the same episode) - I'm of the belief that it has to mean something.

Boar

Lostpedia notes:

  • Following Locke's bold suggestion ("Walkabout"), the castaways hunted boar for food.
  • Sawyer caught a boar, but decided to let it live. ("Outlaws")
  • Locke and Charlie found the body of a boar that's apparently been killed by a polar bear. ("Further Instructions")
  • Sawyer assisted Desmond in hunting a boar in an effort to ingratiate himself with the other survivors. ("Left Behind")
  • (According to the oracle)The Boar is the warrior spirit, that calls a person into the forest  to discover a secret about yourself.  It embodies the wild and untamed power within us all - the kind of power that can bring you to a position of leadership.

If you're being challenged with the Boar you may have lost your sense of direction.  There is a connection between insanity and the boar... with the note that madness and insight are closely allied.  Those who face the boar may have to go through a period of destruction so that something deeper can be brought into their life and they can be reborn.

    Boars--Warrior Initiation

Agent, that fits with some of what I was reading when I was looking things up about the Fisher King myth and druidic culture.  Hunting boar was often part of a male initiation rite and the men were often said to enter a kind of "berserker" state during the hunt.

I hope that description of destruction/rebirth fits Sawyer's arc--he seems to have pulled back from the dark path a bit...I wonder if Desmond is just starting down the destructive end...

    Boars--Warrior Initiation

    Brutha!! Desmooooond... nooooooooo!

I don't really think so. I think his odd behavior/inconsistency with Claire and Aaron getting rescued has something to do with his flashes. And I'll be confident enough to blame the writers if I'm wrong 'cause they said we'll see more flashes. And we haven't yet! Smile (though I really am considering an unfortunate situation involving Claire... but I really hope not)

Destruction/rebirth - we know Sawyer wanted to "play house" with Kate. Knowing she might be pregnant, that's a turnaround if you consider how he fled from Cassidy and Clementine. But... Kate leaves the island, so I think there's more than enough to go to rattle Sawyer's cage. Rowr!

    Bees

    Lostpedia says

A swarm of bees harassed Charlie, Jack & Kate. ("House of the Rising Sun")

The Druid oracle notes that bees due to their nature symbolize community.  Bees show there is value in organization, working hard and celebration.

If the bee challenges you - it may indicate that you are feeling out of place and unsure about your role in life.  If you feel isolated from your community and like an outsider - prod yourself into action before someone prods you.

    Horse

Oh this is too cool - going on with the Druid Oracle card thing...

The horse  is a call to travel - and can be taken both physically, or spiritually.  To find inner peace - those facing the horse must look at what makes them restless - not able to settle down, stay in one place - or accept their place in the flow of events or their part in it.

    Oh so Kate!

    Cavalhos... hm...

You know, there is an Afro-American --well, mostly Afro-Brazilian-- religion, the Candomble, also called Macumba, brought to Brazil by African slaves. Their ritual includes dancing to the music of drums until some of the celebrants gets into a trance an is "mounted" by one of the Orixás. If that happens, the individual is called "cavalho" --horse. This happens too in another Synchretic Afro-Brazilian religion, the Umbanda.

This Candomble has evolved with time, adopting part of the Christian saints as "double identities" of the Orixás --mostly to hide from the Catholic Church the real subjects of their worship. The Umbanda also shows this "mix".

Although I didn't see a direct relationship to Lost, there are a couple of loose links: the Black Rock slaveship and the fact that the guys at the Artic Station, and also Naomi, are Brazilian.

    Orixas or Orishas

The Wiki entry on Orishas, esp. the particular deities, seemed like they could be Lost related. (And strangely "Orishas" is also the name of a band I like.)

    No wonder

"Other historians link the Druids to soothsaying and healing practices." --Jennifer Viegas

    Other!! Healing!!

"Within the wooden, chambered burial site, researchers have excavated a wine warmer, cremated human remains, a cloak pinned with brooches, a jet bead, divining rods (for fortune-telling), a series of surgical instruments, a strainer bowl last used to brew Artemisia-containing tea, a board game carefully laid out with pieces in play, as well as other objects." --Jennifer Viegas

Surgical instruments!! Board game!! (Backgammon, what else?)

"The surgical kit found in the grave includes iron and copper alloy scalpels, a surgical saw, hooks, needles, forceps and probes." --Jennifer Viegas

    Forceps!!

"Surviving metal corners and hinges from the board allowed Pitts to reconstruct it as an 8-inch by 12-inch rectangle. Raised sides suggest dice might have been used. The white and blue glass counters were positioned with care. Some were straight across the sides, another in a diagonal line and one white marker close to the board's center." --Jennifer Viegas

Raised sides!! DICE!! I told ya, it's Backgammon!!

    ...

Ok, did I go "Lost" enough? Laughing

    Now wonder

    and human sacrifice and transfiguration...

And what you just posted about Lapidus and Von Eschenbach! Druids--The Fisher King (Winter King)! Vegetation Myth (The Green Man)! Wooot!
