Photography

I've been a fan of photography for as long as I can remember and thought I'd post a forum for it.

Black and white photography is one of the most classic forms of art imo prominently because they eliminate color and emphasize the play of light. They are ideal for capturing facial features and expression to detail and adding a degree of drama that results in a beautifully artful expression.

True to Life - B&W

(of course, the forum is for all kinds of photography - I just love black and white)

Photography Competition

Hey, I just got an email that one of my photos was selected in the architectural photo competition that Jukin entered me in--so it'll be appearing in their calendar.  I think it was this one:

That's a really cool photo

Congratulations on the contest!

I like the perspective and depth in this shot.

Awesome!

So what is this a photo of, exactly?

Cambridge

England, that is.  I don't know what the building was--I don't think it was connected to any of the colleges though.  I had just walked out of the college green at Trinity and this was back out on the street (had to avoid scaffolding from some kind of construction I remember).

St. John's

Isn't this St. John's or the Church of St John???I don't remember all of it?  The only reason I might know or remember is because I was side tracked this weekend with some old photos of England.  I'll have to check when I get home.

St. John's

Wow, good eye.  I googled St. John's and found the building.  It's where the divinity faculty for St. John's college has their offices (on St. John's Street).  Built in 1878-79, the architect is Basil Champneys.

What a coincidence

It also helps that I just looked at the pictures this weekend.  I didn't think about it when I saw it on FB, but when I saw the word "Trinity" in your description, I remembered exactly where I had seen it before.  I have a very grainy photo of the St. John statue which is above one of the entrances of the building.   Did you happen to go inside?

Coincidence

No I didn't go inside :-(

I'm not sure it was open 'cause they were doing some kind of renovation work.

A few more photos that I found

This is in London off Picadilly Circus

Re: a few more photos

Note to GC--I don't quite know how this works--if I'm hogging bandwidth or whatever the pertinent measurement is, let me know :-)

Beauty of Bridges

Well, if there were an "ancient architecture" forum I'd post there but there's not and I'm too lazy to start one.  This'll do.

I thought these were absolutely stunning and comes with nice descriptions of historical background.

Think my favourite one there

is the Ponte Vecchio. It's the colors--and the idea of people living on the bridge.

Bridges

I like the Zakim Bridge in Boston a lot. Zakim Image 1; Zakim Image 2

Boston's bridge

Oo, preeeety...

The Ponte Vecchio bridge was my favorite as well. Smile

Fingers Crossed

Trying to post some of my photos:

Nice

When was this taken? What is the picture of, exactly? It looks a bit on the abstract side...

The original?

The original photo--the photo within the photo--was probably taken in the 40's. It's my aunt. I took the photo and placed a branch of bougainvillea on top of it and I played with it in photoshop--think I used the watercolor filter. It's about 15 years old I think.

Heh...

... yeah, I was gonna' ask ya, Jaz... "Who's the cute tomayta?" Smile

Heh...

She is, isn't she Smile

I love that photo 'cause it gives you a real sense of her personality.

Ahh...

A photo within a photo...

Hmm... that's interesting, actually... touch up on old pictures of relatives on photoshop... that's kinda cool...

Re: It Worked!

Heh...

This one immediately reminds me of the video to the song "Walk on the Wild Side" Smile

That song...

always reminds me of Fred's F/other

HAH! ...or M/ather

And now it will with me too, thanks.

I love that video, tho, srsly.

Walk on the Wild Side

Heh, well, it is New York.

Re: It Worked!

Hey...

It looks like it's melting...

...what's going on there??

Photoshop

Mmm, gonna have to retrace my steps and figure out what I did to that in photoshop. (I guess I should be taking notes.)

Heh

Well, unlike a painter, a photographer starts with something finished and works backwards - it's all good Wink

Re: It Worked!

Wow jaz...

Amazing job with this... that looks exactly like something out of a GQ magazine!

Hey...

Thanks Kat :-)

When I start my next career as ace photo journalist for a great metropolitan newspaper, I'm going to look to you for a reference . ;-)

Hee hee

I got your back Smile
