What counts as science?

This piece begins by considering revoking the Nobel Prizes for economics.  But is really about the question of why economics is considered a science but sociology isn't.

The "Nobel Clawback Committee"

Reminds me of this...

If we're so rich why aren't we happy

pleasure vs enjoyment
caring vs consumerism

Neither in themselves evil; both can be taken to "evil" extremes.

Oh and...

... why does the country focus on pharmacology instead of naturopathy?

(Treating the symptoms of a disease rather than focusing on disease prevention.)

From my point of view if both are done scientifically they are both extremely beneficial and compliment each other very well.

Though a complex issue, the reasons again are mostly political and tend to be more about money than actually caring for a patient in need.

Nobel Prizes for economics

I've often wondered that myself.  Sociology it seems to me is a rather important field.  Were it taken more seriously I think it could pehaps help with interpreting global trends in dealing with issues like war and terrorism by looking at human behavior in a group.  After WWII especially.  To be honest when I first went to college (some while back), I didn't even know there was such a field of study.  Even then it was only a field you went into if you wanted to get into social work.  So the perceived "caregivers" again are getting the short end of the stick, while the focus remains on the money side of the issue.  I supppose the notion is that if you have money you can do anything, care for anyone you want, but that really is a false notion.

In a funny way I was thinking about this yesterday in a very different setting.  A sports fan friend of mine has been following a potential NFL star in whether he will chose to go to school with the scholarship he has earned - or pass that up to make millions playing in the NFL.  I think the kid ended up compromising - 1 year for school which would allow him to take advantage of his scholarship so that he can pursue his interests after his football career.  In this case it's a whole lot easier to see that it's a tough choice.  But really it's a choice people face everyday.  Do you "work for a living" do what it takes to earn the money to get by or do you "live for work" by pursuing the thing you love?  I believe most people think the latter option is too risky.

Florida State S Myron Rolle will study at Oxford University in 2009, rather than enter the NFL Draft.A Rhodes Scholar, Rolle will pursue a one-year master's degree in medical anthropology and possibly enter the 2010 NFL Draft at age 23. The league's Draft Advisory Board had given Samari's distant cousin a top-50 pick grade.
